Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy

Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy for men with enlarged prostates

Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy

Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy is a minimally invasive procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. This technique uses measured doses of super-heated steam to target excess prostate tissue and reduce obstruction. By eliminating this tissue, urine flow can be restored, and associated symptoms can be minimized or eliminated. Typically, these symptoms can include:

  • Urinary frequency.
  • Repeated trips to the restroom at night (Nocturia).
  • Urinary urgency.
  • An irregular urine flow.
  • A weak stream of urine.
  • Straining to urinate.

Rezūm therapy is an in-office procedure in which a transurethral scope is inserted into the penis. The scope is then passed through the prostate, to the base of the bladder. The scope is slowly manipulated along the urethra while doses of steam are released into areas of the prostate with tissue obstruction. The procedure takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and a pain blocking gel is administered prior to the procedure to help keep the patient comfortable. A catheter will be placed after the procedure until swelling in the prostate is reduced. This normally takes several days.

For men who have tried medication, but are seeking a more permanent solution to their enlarged prostate, the Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy can offer several benefits:

  • Potential replacement of enlarged prostate medications.
  • In-office procedure that does not require general anesthesia.
  • Preserves existing sexual function.
  • Improves urinary function within a short period of time.
  • Ability to return to normal activities relatively quickly.

The Rezum Water Vapor Therapy is one of several treatment options available for men with an enlarged prostate. As with any treatment for this condition, the determining factors will include the patient’s overall health, how successful other treatment options have been, patient preference, and patient lifestyle. For some men Rezum can be a good choice to if they prefer not to take medications, if medications have failed, or if they choose not to explore surgical options.
