Male Sexual Dysfunction

Male sexual dysfunction is common but treatable.

Male sexual dysfunction occurs when a man is unable, for physical or psychological reasons, to fully engage in sexual intercourse. Dysfunction problems can occur anytime during the male sexual cycle: excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution.

While male sexual dysfunction doesn’t normally result in serious health problems, it can make men feel anxious, inadequate or depressed. It can also cause relationship problems.

What are the primary causes of sexual dysfunction?

There are many conditions that can contribute to sexual dysfunction. Some examples are:

  • Heart disease
  • Vascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis
  • Hormone problems or imbalances, such as low testosterone
  • Chronic alcohol and drug abuse
  • Medications, such as antidepressants or blood pressure medications
  • Psychological factors
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Worrying about sexual performance
  • Relationship problems
  • Depression
  • Past trauma

While the above factors and medical conditions may contribute to sexual performance, they do not guarantee that men will have problems with sexual function.

What are the primary types of male sexual dysfunction?

The three most common types of male sexual dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction (ED)
Patients with erectile dysfunction, also referred to as ED or impotence, are unable to get or keep an erection that would allow them to have sexual intercourse.

Inhibited sexual desire (low libido)
When men have inhibited sexual desire, or low libido, they will have a decreased desire for sex or no desire at all.

Ejaculation disorders
When a patient is unable to ejaculate at the end of the male sexual cycle, he may have an ejaculation disorder. The most common type of ejaculation disorder is premature ejaculation. This is when men  ejaculate before or right after penetration. A less common problem is inhibited or retarded ejaculation, which means that men cannot ejaculate or achieve an orgasm with their partner.
