Aquablation Therapy For Enlarged Prostate

Aquablation is a relatively new, FDA approved procedure for the treatment of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH or enlarged prostate). It’s unique because it utilizes the AquaBeam Robotic System to deliver a heat-free waterjet to remove prostate tissue overgrowth. In addition, it’s an effective option for men with any size prostate (including high-volume enlarged prostates). This procedure also features a cystoscope camera and transrectal ultrasound imaging to allow the surgeon to view the entire prostate real time during treatment.

How does Aquablation work?

The Aquablation procedure is performed under general anesthesia in a surgical setting. Once the patient is anesthetized, the surgeon will begin by placing an ultrasound scope into the rectum. Additionally, the AquaBeam cystoscope will be inserted through the urethra into the bladder. Next, the Aquabeam robotic arm will be attached to the cystoscope handpiece. The camera that is attached to the cystoscope, as well as imaging produced by the ultrasound probe, will project onto a large screen for the surgeon. With this clear visualization, the surgeon can precisely map the areas to be re-sectioned while identifying and avoiding anatomical areas within close proximity. Because each patient’s prostate and treatment plan are unique, this imaging also allows the surgeon to precisely target tissue is to be removed.

Once initiated, the AquaBeam robot will produce a high-velocity, unheated, sterile saline that will follow the exact mapping plan outlined by the surgeon. During treatment, the surgeon will have complete visualization of the prostate, the resection procedure, and control of the machine. At any time, the surgeon is able to instantly pause the procedure in order to make minor adjustments when necessary.

Aquablation benefits

Men who choose to treat their BPH with the Aquablation system can benefit from the following:

  • Aquablation is indicated for men with any size prostate.
  • This procedure is able to generate precise tissue removal, based on the surgeon’s mapping plan, during a short period of time regardless of prostate size.
  • Real time visualization allows the surgeon to identify and avoid anatomical features within close proximity. This can help reduce sexual side effects.
  • AquaBeam waterjet resection means that there are no incisions.
  • Robotic technology allows for precise, predictable and consistent outcomes.
  • Low rate of complications pertaining to urinary incontinence, erectile and/or ejaculatory dysfunction.
